HETAS Approved Chimney Breast and Fireplace Renovations and Restoration in Somerset

Our customer wanted to transform the look and feel of their lounge, which we achieved by removing the old 1950’s fireplace and installing a new limestone surround together with a quartzite stone tiled recess. This classic timeless look changes the character of a room and provides a stunning focal point. We installed Defra approved Ecosy Curve 5kw, multi fuel woodburner as it compliments the limestone surround and looks proportionally correct.

We always protect the limestone fire surrounds with a good quality limestone sealer before installation or the slightest finger print can stain the limestone and be very difficult to remove.

The slate hearth was cut to fit as a T-shape on site and the width determined by the length of the mantel. The slate hearth is usually at least the width of the mantel to balance the overall look.

Hidden Dangers of Fireplace Renovations & Restorations

Always ask a HETAS installer or qualified builder for advice if attempting to enlarge a chimney fireplace yourself.

On inspection we found the customers fireplace contained a large void adjoining the neighbours property. (see Diagram). Therefore, we had to consider the implications of enlarging the fireplace to fit the limestone surround.

In order to enlarge the fireplace we would have to fill the void with over a cubic meter of cement to above the potential height of the knockout area and then top up further with vermiculate and cement as a precaution to protect from condensation which normally occurs due to heat in the chimney breast from the woodburner.

The customer opted to keep her existing fireplace opening size rather than enlarge the recess, but was keen to keep the limestone fireplace surround and quartzite stone tiles. Therefore, we modified the plans to keep the limestone fire surround and quartzite stone tiles by inserting slate slips to cover the brickwork that we would have typically removed.
