This project involved removing an open fire and old stone surround in a bungalow at Corfe, near Taunton. We initially removed the stone surround to expose the original fireplace opening. The fireplace recess couldn’t be enlarged due to structural issues so we installed a new Brazillian slte hearth and rendered the inside before plastering the recess.
We installed a low cost Mi Flues Derwent 5kw multi-fuel stove, which is both SIA and Defra approved so complies with new air quality regulations due to be enforced in 2022.
Once the stove was installed a solid oak mantel was installed to complete the look. Oak mantels need to have at least a 450mm distance from the bottom of the mantel to top of the woodburner in order to comply to HETAS distance to combustibles regulations.
